Through data collection and review of time lapse film the park's transformation is distilled through movement and usage pattern into a space capable of harnessing that public energy (http://grangeparktoronto.ca/). After our studio engaged with the public as facilitators for a dialogue about the future of Grange park the community selected my design as the basis for the strategy moving forward. Though it has been a long time in the making and it is now in professional hands it is nice to see that my initial thoughts and instincts as a student have guided the community to a completed project nearly 8 years on, and that a fitting cultural space will connect the broader community in a meaningful and lasting way. <image:title>On the boards - MISSION ROCK NEIGHBORHOOD & PARKS</image:title>
<image:caption>PROJECT DESCRIPTION- A network of distinct open spaces and lively, pedestrian-oriented streets drive our design and the future neighborhood identity. A vibrant, active waterfront park is a key feature of the public realm, a dynamic place that will establish a paradigm for resilient 21st-century waterfront parks, and an amenity for the regional San Francisco Bay Area community. Within the park, a waterfront promenade links a range of activities. Park program activates the park and retail draws visitors through the park and to the water’s edge. Carefully considered adjacencies of active and passive program areas support the choreography of activity through the park. Connections to new pedestrian- and retail-oriented streets, the San Francisco Bay Trail network, and other signature open spaces at Mission Rock and adjacent to the site keep the park populated and lively. This park is coupled with the rehabilitated historic Pier 48 and AT&T Park to create a synergistic public open space that integrates industrial, maritime, and recreational uses. Other key public realm features of Mission Rock include a neighborhood square; an active retail-focused shared street that connects the waterfront to the heart of the district; an active wharf to accommodate maritime use and public access to the bay; and a unique waterfront street that encompasses the active piers and provides pedestrian and bicycle waterfront access for the Blue Greenway. Special attention to a diversity of experiences enrich the city at multiple scales to cultivate thriving street life for this new neighborhood. The integrated public realm experiences and active ground-floor building design create a new, inviting, and memorable urban district. <image:title>On the boards - COMMUNITY SCAFFOLD LONDON</image:title>
<image:caption>PROJECT DESCRIPTION - City of London, UK looks to the boundaries of architecture to bridge social gaps by providing a unique yet simple ‘scaffold’ from which to build local community involvement, discussion and connection; to begin to knit together a story of their space. The COMMUNITY SCAFFOLD will be constructed with the durable and versatile Kee Klamp system. Ths ‘Scaffold’ provides a basis for creating a unique, cost effective and sustainable intervention which together with a series of stewards selected by LFA & our team may program, care for & build a beautiful community through this ubiquitous architectural form. Local gardeners, crafters, makers, authors, illustrators, designers, architects, public institutions & vendors will be invited to participate and utilize the space in the aim to bring together people who may not otherwise cross paths in their busy daily routine or social circles. The COMMUNITY SCAFFOLD provides a refuge within a transparent but lush garden with large planters filled with plants capable of withstanding urban conditions amidst locally fabricated fixed furnishings, a little library, & a series of hanging planters further creating a calm oasis in which the community may gather. A community chalkboard & social media presence will be used to follow what people like, inform them of events & provide the LFA with ongoing feeds of data on whats happening @COMMUNITYSCAFFOLDLONDON. All items (excluding the Kee Klamp system, a british made scaffold & building kit) within the parklet would be stewarded by different local groups who either have a hand in making, or maintaining them. The initial funding from the London Festival of Architecture will provide the foundational elements for the COMMUNITY SCAFFOLD. Additional crowdsourced fundraising will be done through the purchase of all elements of the parklet. This may include high bid items such as the scaffold, or a bespoke locally crafted wood bench to low cost items such as a terra cotta pot for a fiver. This will help to fund the ambitious programming of the site for the residents, visitors & people who work in the City of London. Above all, COMMUNITY SCAFFOLD is an armature for community connection with an eye for revealing the local context & story of a space that may otherwise go unnoticed. Its ambition lies not simply in creating a object, but a community that will thrive after this temporary scaffold has been removed. <image:title>Public - Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza Competition</image:title>
<image:caption>PROJECT DESCRIPTION- A champion for the rights of all, Harvey Milk’s legacy is best conveyed through an inclusive, comfortable, and open space. Our concept for Harvey Milk Plaza is both a memorial and a destination, where we can honor and interact with Harvey’s contributions. Like Harvey, the plaza is all of us. When Harvey Milk was assassinated San Franciscans marched peacefully into the Castro and held a candlelight vigil to mourn and honor their most cherished and respected leader. Harvey Milk’s legacy symbolizes the freedom to live life with authenticity for the millions of LGBTQ women and men around the world. As designers and planners we care deeply about the democratization of public space and we are inspired to honor and elevate Harvey Milk Plaza and transform it into a place where Harvey’s message of hope and equality for all can be played out in the public sphere. / Multi-media installation -A multimedia art installation stands as a tribute to Harvey Milk, providing a historical context for his life and accomplishments. Pictures of Harvey Milk will be viewed alongside the powerful statements he made as a civil rights pioneer. Here, visitors to the plaza will get a true understanding of Harvey Milk’s legacy and the space to absorb and process his contribution to society. / Soap Box -At the base of the steps is a small permanent sculptural representation of a soap box. This structure pays homage to Harvey Milk’s legacy while creating a space for people to speak their truths and inspire others to do the same. We envision this as a space where the community can come together to observe, reflect, participate and inspire. / Art plaza & gardens- On the second level we have designated an area for temporary rotating works of art/sculpture by the LGBTQ community. / Living Walls Poem - Next to the elevator is a poem by Harvey milk. His powerful words serve as a reminder of the steps Harvey Milk took to live his authentic life and stand up for civil rights. / Harvey Milk Cafe and Exhibit Space -The building is home to the Harvey Milk Cafe and Exhibit Space. The exhibit space will showcase images and artifacts from Harvey Milk’s legacy. / Elevator Skin - The elevator skin will contain the supersized words “Hope” and “For you and you and you,” superimposed on the glass. / Plaza Art -The paving consists of graphic designs that flow throughout the plaza spaces. With infrastructural updates required, a backlog of maintenance due to statewide budgetary considerations, multiple community viewpoints to counterbalance, and a strong history in ecological value it is an opportunity and a challenge. As initial exercises to engage and excite the community a Treasure hunt and ideas meeting were held with activities and engagement for all levels, including a game involving in-depth mapping and citizen surveys, analytical research and data mining from the history of the Park to organizations that have supported it, and festive kid activities that double as pedagogical tools for engagement on local history and ecological information. The Team includes SiteLab Urban Studio, Lotus Water, EHDD Architects, and the SF Recreation and Parks Department ( http://sfrecpark.org/project/mclaren-park-improvements-project-2012-bond/, https://mclarenparksf.org/, http://www.sitelaburbanstudio.com/, http://lotuswater.com/) ROLE- Lead Illustrator, Lead Graphic Design, Lead Content creator, Team Community Outreach, Team Data mining, Team Data analytics. <image:caption>Cloud Wall is a project that focused on an community driven mural with modest rules. All participants were to use triangular or hexagonal chalk drawings within a set bounding mark. This was an opportunity for a community to partake in an analog ‘Cloud’ mural. As the mural unfolded an organic shape formed based on larger patterns that were set in motion creating a fractal like experience. The simple chalk and paint materials, analog method & communal structure relate the constant push and pull between community, technology & human creativity.
